MOGAO CAVES: AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

Produced for the Dunhuang Foundation, this immersive experience was screened in conjunction with famed composer Tan Dun’s performance of his “Buddha Passion” at the Seattle Symphony’s Benroyal Hall in November 2023, a work which is inspred by the Mogao Caves.

The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses stunning works of Buddhist art and sculptures. Created over a period of 1,000 years, these remote caves contain a vast repository of Buddhist religious and cultural history.

The immersive experience tells the story of the Mogao Caves and showcases the stunning works of Buddhist art from the site – one of the world’s greatest cultural treasures.

The immersive multimedia experience uses cutting-edge technology to transport the audience to a journey through the caves, featuring stunning visuals, soundscapes and narration bringing the ancient buddist art and the caves to life.

Utilizing a mix of extremely high-resolution 16K imagery, 3D visualization, photogrammertry and sound to create large scale immersive environments, Mogao Caves – An Immersive Experience features narration provided by world-renowned experts of Buddhist art and history.

The captivating score of “Buddha’s Passion” draws inspiration from Tan Dun’s profound experiences exploring the Mogao Caves. Situated by the Silk Road on the edge of the Gobi Desert in Dunhuang, China, these ancient grottoes have stood for over 1,000 years.

BUDDHA PASSION: COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY TAN DUN

Composer and conductor of the epic scale Buddha Passion oratorio, Tan Dun has received numerous international accolades, including Grammy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Grawemeyer Award, and an Academy Award for his work on the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” featuring Yo-Yo Ma, Chen Xie-Yang, and David Cossin.
